Is anyone familiar with creating custom icons in OS X? Long long ago, in a galaxy far... anyway, I used to use ResEdit, then I had a contextual menu thing that would edit icons. I don't have those anymore, heh. What I am trying to do specifically at the moment is take a round shaped image and make it into a nice looking icon. At the moment, I get a white square around it. I thought of icon factory but their plug-in requires photoshop, which I don't have. Any suggestions?

Ricky:

I am quite fond of Iconographer. Shareware.

Also, you may try a small app named "IconComposer" that is included with the OSX developer tools. This may be closer to what you were using previously (ResEdit), but to get it you'll need to install the whole developer toolkit, which you may not be too keen on.

Good luck,

Andy

How easy do you think it would be with Iconographer to do something useful with this image?

Image

(The source image is actually alot larger, also doesn't have a black background..)

If all you are interested in doing is masking the black area so that it is a circular icon, you should have problems whatsoever. Just copy and then paste the graphic (from Photoshop, imageready, graphic converter, whatever) into iconographer, and go to work! ;)
