Lately the DVD+ recorder connected to the TV has replaced my VCR and I never have problems playing the burned disc on other machines. The machine will record only in dvd plus, not minus

However with the Mac Mini and the recently acquired iBook (finally) they won't play. It doesn't even acknowledge a disc has been inserted and I have to open iTunes to eject the disk.

Just wondering if anyone else had this problem and if there was a workaround, maybe something other than the DVD player in OS X. Using Panther on the Mini and Tiger on the iBook.

Would be great to catch up on what I recorded the night before while mobile, mainly Letterman and Conan.

Jim,

You can try MPlayerOSX or VLC. However, if the Finder doesn't even show the DVD+R on the desktop, that's not a good sign. Would it be possible to try another brand of DVD+R and see if the Mac mini or iBook like that brand better?

Thanks for the link, I'll give MPlayer a try. Tried a few brands of blank DVDs since I heard some are finicky.

I know VLC will play DVDs, but I have never found a way to make MPlayer play them. VLC is interesting because it will play DVDs even if you put in a disc from a different region than you've set your DVD player too. It is a little slow, though. I haven't quite figured out how this works, but it seems to, anyway.

However, if it isn't showing up... it probably won't play under anything.
