I am having an annoying problem with a Hewlett-Packard printer connected to the USB on an Airport Extreme. It often begins to print a document, then abruptly stops and will not finish printing. I then have to open the print utility and clear the document to use the printer again and it cycles the partially printed document out. Needless to say, this gets pretty wasteful.

I am running up to date software for everything; computer, Airport Extreme, and the printer. I have double checked for drivers, firmware, and everything else imaginable and have not been able to kick this problem. I also recently replaced my hard drive and completely reloaded everything on the new drive and the problem still persists.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. If I disconnect this printer from the Airport and run it directly off of a USB computer port, no problem exists.

Thanks, Daryl

Daryl,

Which HP Printer are you trying to use with the Extreme's USB printer port? I've found the Extreme base station to be very picky as to what printers will work correctly with it.

Apple only officially supports the printers listed on the printer compatibility page. I have a Deskjet 5150 (not officially supported) and I have had the identical problems that you've had. I've even tried the Gimp-Print drivers, but the same problem occurs. Looking on Apple's discussion boards, it's a popular topic.

If possible, I'd suggest simply not using the USB printer port and plugging your printer into a Mac. Obviously, that's not very convenient if your only Mac is a notebook.

Thanks for your reply, Bob. I'm trying to use a DeskJet 1220c and it is not listed as supported, so I'm sure you're right in your hypothesis. And you are also correct that there is no problem when hooked directly, but I have been trying to share this printer throught the Airport with one desktop and two powerbooks. It sure would be nice if it would work a little more reliably.

Bob,

My 1220c is a listed printer, but I still have the problem. Go figure!
